Meet Our Professional Therapists

Steven C. Altshuler, PhD

Dr. Altshuler is Director of Albany Psychological Associates and provides individual psychotherapy to adults. Before coming to the Capital District in 1990, he was Assistant Director of the Psychiatric Emergency Service at Dartmouth Medical School and has also worked as an Emergency and Victimized Woman Specialist in Denver, CO.

Dr. Altshuler has extensive experience in the evaluation of alcohol dependency and the dually-diagnosed patient. He has been an adjunct instructor at Siena College and taught and supervised psychiatric residents, medical students, and psychology interns at Dartmouth Medical School.

Dr. Altshuler’s areas of special interest include the treatment of post-trauma states, individuals with chronic medical conditions like multiple sclerosis, and patients who grew up in abusive environments. He also provides forensic evaluation services for both criminal and civil matters.

Dr. Altshuler received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and he holds an undergraduate degree from Oberlin College.

Robin Belansky MS, LMHC

Ms. Belansky is a licensed mental health counselor who has specialized in treating individuals, couples, and families who struggle with grief, the effects of trauma and PTSD, child/adult abuse and neglect, and substance abuse. In addition to treating persons with depression and anxiety, Ms. Belansky also has expertise in working with survivors of clergy abuse.

She does therapy groups and presentations in the community on healthy relationships. Ms. Belansky was the clinical supervisor of the Crime Victims and Sexual Violence Center for over 20 years. Ms. Belansky received both her BA in Psychology and her master's degree from the University at Albany.

Frederick L. Jones MS, LMHC

Mr. Jones is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and holds a Master’s Degree from SUNY Plattsburgh. He has over ten years of working in community mental health and has been the Director of Behavioral Health at the Whitney Young Health Center, and he has been the Program Director of the Partial Hospitalization Outpatient Program at Four Winds Psychiatric Hospital in Saratoga Springs. Before this, he had been Program Manager of the Equinox Inc PROS program, a psychiatric rehabilitation program for adults with primary mental health needs. There, he also guided intern students and clinical supervision to developing mental health professionals.

Mr. Jones has experience working with individuals with severe mental health disorders and addiction issues, especially individuals struggling with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and those needing assistance in stress management, emotion regulation, and relationship issues. He also has experience in the utilization of cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing techniques.

Debra Nozik, LCSW

Ms. Nozik is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who received her master's degree in social work from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1978. She specializes in the treatment of depression, anxiety, PTSD, sexual abuse and severe medical issues, and has extensive training and experience in couples therapy. She has presented workshops in the areas of stress management, parenting, relationship skills, and dealing with health-related issues.

Steven R. Nozik, PhD

Dr. Nozik is a licensed psychologist providing psychological services since 1983 and has been in private practice since 1987. He specializes in the treatment of adult individuals and couples, with expertise in the treatment of anxiety disorders, depression and other mood disorders, psychological trauma, relationship problems, abuse, anger management, stress management, adjustment disorders, and addictions.

Dr. Nozik created and served as the first director of the PTSD program at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, and has also served as director of the Young Veterans Program, treating trauma and addictions at the Northport, NY VA Medical Center, and the Chemical Dependency Rehabilitation program at the Stratton VA.

Dr. Nozik is certified in addiction treatment, Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), and rational-emotive behavior therapy. He is a clinical instructor of psychiatry at Albany Medical College and a staff psychologist at the Stratton VA, and an adjunct professor of psychology in the Department of Psychology at SUNY Albany. Additionally, his clinical duties include supervising and training doctoral-level interns and practicum students and has lectured to many professional and community audiences. He received his doctorate in counseling psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Erin K. Weiss, MS, LMHC

Ms. Weiss is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 15 years of experience providing counseling to adults and children. She has been the child and adolescent specialist at Albany County Crime Victim and Sexual Violence Center, where she has been employed since 2002, providing individual and family therapy for victims of abuse.

Other areas of interest and experience include treating adults and children who struggle with depression and anxiety disorders. Ms. Weiss holds a Master's Degree from the College of Saint Rose, where she has also served as an adjunct instructor in their graduate counseling program.

Edelgard Wulfert, PhD

Dr. Wulfert is a licensed psychologist who has been serving patients in the Capital District since 1989. She has been the Chair of the Department of Psychology, University at Albany and Professor of Psychology (Collins Fellow), as well as the Dean of the University College of Arts and Sciences. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and received post-doctoral training in sex offender treatment and research at the University of Mexico.

Dr. Wulfert has published numerous book chapters and papers in various scientific journals. Her areas of special interest and expertise include compulsive behaviors – especially pathological gambling and alcohol abuse, anxiety disorders and marital problems, including sexual dysfunction.

Dr. Wulfert is tri-lingual and able to conduct psychotherapy with adults in English, German, and Spanish.
